We did not have access to easy organic material to bring into the zone to cover soil and bring fertility, so we basically decided to accumulate biomass on site.
The Mexican Sunflower, Botón de Oro, or Tithonia has proved to be an outstanding ally. It is easy to propagate (just jam a stick of it into the ground and it grows), fast growing, almost effortless to chop and manage, provides good shade and protection for high value tree starts, and is super nutritious mulch for the beds when chopped back. This hardworking plant is a super hero in our farm!”
