”I know I am a total gardening nerd, but few discoveries have thrilled me as much as figuring out that right now with these first rains, the stout clumping grasses that are so prevalent in the farm can be pulled up almost effortlessly. Each weeded clump of grass carries many handfuls of beautiful topsoil within its fibrous roots, so when they are placed in the raised planting beds they contribute both good organic matter for decomposition as well as good rich topsoil to build up the profile of the beds. We are eliminating weeds while mulching and building the beds. That’s what, in Permaculture traditions, is called stacking functions! So satisfying!!!”
