”Yes, biochar is basically just charcoal. When wood burns without adequate oxygen it turns into fixed charcoal carbon that can become stable soil carbon for centuries. Ancient Amazonian cultures used this technique called Terra preta, or black earth, to create lasting fertility in the rainforest where heavy rainfall tends to leach away fertility. The carbon holds on to nutrients and moisture like a permanent sponge releasing them to the plants as needed. We are going to be adding biochar to our garden beds in the farm. I am so excited!”
